Plant managers: How to optimise my factory layout?

Improvements Cellular Flows

From a functional layout to a Cellular layout

We have recorded a new video (18 min.) presenting the necessary steps to build an optimal factory layout based on technical and financial constraints.

The purpose of  SIMOGGA™ is to reorganise the layout of production facilities designed functionally. In this type of organisation, a lot of traffic (material or human) is observed through the production floor. This lead to a highly complex traffic management at the workshop as well as inefficiencies and relatively long lead time. SIMOGGA™ is also used to revise cellular layouts.

Create the ideal cellular layout

Lets come back to the video!

How to design an ideal factory layout?

Here are the detailed steps we went through in order to propose an optimised factory layout:

  1. We build the as-is situation
  2. We analyse the as-is situation (in terms of flows) without taking into account the technical nor the cultural constraints
  3. We decompose the flows and make them independent
  4. We build the to-be (optimal) scenario
  5. We integrate the technical constraints
    1. e.g. several machines can’t be moved due to their size, configuration or specificity (acid bath, oven, etc.)
    2. e.g. several machines can’t be duplicated (for financial reasons, etc.)
  6. We complete the study by providing a realistic scenario
