AMIA Systems has worked hard during the summer to strengthen our foundations for the future:

  • We moved to our own offices in the GreenBizz Brussels
  • We opened a local antenna in Gosselies to get closer to our Walloon partners and implement ourselves durably in this shaking industrial environment.

Relocating to GreenBizz

Our former offices, the KBC Start’it incubator, were getting too little and not convenient to our growing activities. We decided to move to our own offices while staying in a dynamic, game-changing and community focused venue. We rapidly chose for  : a complex focused on environment and society changing businesses. Why? It combines an incubator, fixed offices and production workshops. This visions perfectly aligns with our mission: support and implement change in industrial and production environment.

What is Cellular Manufacturing? /what-is-cellular-manufacturing/ /what-is-cellular-manufacturing/#respond Wed, 26 Jul 2017 14:09:29 +0000 /?p=91396/

Cellular Manufacturing is a lean manufacturing approach that helps companies build a variety of products for their customers with as little waste as possible. In cellular manufacturing, equipment and workstations are arranged in a sequence that supports a smooth flow of materials and components through the process, with minimal transport or delay.

One piece flow is a condition that exists when products move through a manufacturing process one unit at a time, at a rate determined by the needs of the customer. The opposite of one piece flow is mass production with batches and queues. One piece flow focuses on flow efficiency rather than on resource efficiency.

Applying one piece flow allows to:

  • Minimize stocks and thereby reduce transport and inventory wastes
  • Deliver quicker
  • Minimize damage, deterioration and  obsolescence.

How to operate in a U-shaped Cell?

Reduce travel distance by arranging equipment and workstations closer together. The beginning of the process must be close to the the end of the process. The goal is to minimize the travel distance between each steps and cycles.

What do you need in order to implement Cellular Manufacturing?

  • Organize  your operations and equipment in a logic and  validated U-Shaped Cell
  • Empower your operators and set multimachine and multiskilled operators as a standard
  • Favor small, flexible machines
  • Using autonomation (Jidoka) to eliminate machine watching

How to design cells for ?

  1. Analyse & document the process today (ASIS Situation)
  2. Define the product family that the cell will produce and calculate the TAKT Time for the cell
  3. Balance the work to create flow between work-stations that meets demand constraints
  4. Design the cell for ergonomics
  5. Implement, test and improve the cell through continuous improvement

NLMK Clabecq: Track and Trace development and implementation unlocking a 20% increase in output capacity /nlmk-track-and-trace-development-and-implementation/ /nlmk-track-and-trace-development-and-implementation/#respond Tue, 18 Apr 2017 15:23:51 +0000 /?p=91010/
“Thanks to our partnership with AMIA Systems, we have achieved significant changes and benefits at an unprecedented speed for our very cautious steel industry”.

Roberto Boero, Operational Director NLMK Clabecq

20
output capacity increase (%)
99
Inventory reliability (%)
35
Average output time reduction (%)
98
decrease of delays caused by lost orders (%)
The problem

NLMK produces heavy steel plates of varying quality and dimensions (3 to 24 meters). After production, the plates are stacked above each other at on-site warehouses. Once a truck arrives at the warehouse, the ordered plates need to be located, freed from the plates stored above and charged into the truck. This process is therefore time consuming, representing a costly bottleneck. Locating, tracking and loading plates is complex as the plates are moving permanently from storage unit to others. The former system was not ensuring the reliability of the inventory, limiting the output capacity and creating non optimal workload.

The project

NLMK management and our consultants partnered to develop and implement a specific track & trace solution allowing to locate and track the plates while assigning efficient storage location.  The challenges? Managing the change in an extremely prudent industry as steel, building a strong consensus amongst the stakeholders, proof testing the solution on the floor level and deliver a functional and 100% trustworthy inventory management system.

20161101_120142
The Impacts

The implication of all the stakeholders in the design of the solution allowed to implement a fully functional system on one production line warehouse within 3 months unlocking a 99% inventory reliability. After roll-out on the whole plant, the output capacity of the factory grew by 20%, lowering the average output time by 35%. The proximity and presence of our consultant allowed a smooth transition and acceptance of the solution ensuring the use of the track and trace at its full potential. As stated by field operators: “Our work is incredibly facilitated: we don’t waste time anymore on locating the plates”. This positive feeling towards the system and tracking guns is strengthened by the fact the operators participated in the definition process, therefore ensuring a high practical usability.

Business results
  • 20% output capacity increase
  • 99% Inventory reliability
  • Average time to retrieve an order reduced from 13 minutes to 1
  • Average output time reduced by 35%
  • 98% decrease of delays caused by lost orders
Keys to success
  • Design of the solution jointly with all the stakeholders
  • Practical usability and factual added value of the solution
  • Change management expertise and tools to trigger and accompany concrete behavioral change
  • Logistic experience and methodologies
  • Ability to demonstrate benefits and adapt to any obstacle

The customer

SNCB-NMBS is the national railway company of Belgium. The site of Salzinnes performs the major maintenance of diesel and electric locomotives, with complete dismantling and revision of all its component parts (electric motors, relays, bogies, axles, diesel engines)

The challenge

The increase of internal demand and the EU market liberalization of the train maintenance sector in Europe force Salzinnes’ site to improve its productivity in order to meet the coming load growth. The entire site is being redesigned to increase capacity while reducing lead time. Before investing, SNCB-NMBS needs to validate the operational capabilities of the future line while taking efficient decisions.

The project

The bogie section of the plant (the chassis carrying wheels) is crucial in the maintenance flow and was the first focus of our analysis. Moving the bogie hall was the perfect occasion to optimize flows through adopting a cell layout. SIMOGGA Layout in combination with SIMOGGA Planner were used to visualize the future layout and simulate the planning based on parameters such as shifts, lot sizes, operations distribution and finite capacity constraints such as human resources or equipment.

The results

The material produced by SIMOGGA (visualization, quantification and optimizations) was used to communicate and convince decision-makers. The cost of investments has been minimized (including the cancelation of a relocation of a machine and a new investment for ~1Mio€) while maximizing the future line capacity (increased by 150%), removing bottlenecks and decreasing the lead time from 20 to 6,5 days. has validated its operational, financial and logistical choices and is moving forward with a strong understanding of its future operations.

“We shared the same commitment to get operations moving forward.”

Sébastien Corneillie, Implementation Responsible SNCB-NMBS

Business results
  • Validation of the new layout by the management
  • Average lead time reduced from 20 to 6,5 days
  • Validation of the new operational organization (shifts, operators, batch, etc.)
  • Future increase in load capacity estimated to 150%
  • Identification and removal of two bottlenecks
  • Up to €1Mio reduction in investments on improvements
Keys to success
  • Powerful, flexible planning and scheduling simulation capacities
  • Focused approach
  • Intensive implication and partnership between SNCB-NMBS and AMIA Systems
  • Flexibility and adaptability of SIMOGGA

SIMOGGA v.4.6: software suite to optimize flows and monitor the production process. /optimize-flows-and-monitor-the-production-process/ /optimize-flows-and-monitor-the-production-process/#respond Thu, 16 Mar 2017 14:53:30 +0000 /?p=90755/ AMIA Systems today announced the release of SIMOGGA v.4.6: a software suite to optimize flows and monitor the production process.

AMIA Systems, a Université Libre de Bruxelles spin-off, pioneer in visualization, quantification and flow optimization for manufacturing industries announced a new version of SIMOGGA.

Targeting the different stakeholders in the production process, SIMOGGA simplifies and enriches the analysis of industrial optimization. The different actors can be involved in the elaboration of changes to be carried out, which facilitates their implementation.

Philippe VAN DAMME, co-founder of AMIA Systems and leader of the development team depicted some of the main new features: “We have spent a lot of time listening to our clients to improve the user experience. In SIMOGGA Layout Design, we especially paid attention to the visualization and automatic tools (e.g. automatic positioning, display of flows).”

user interface planner

A new user interface easing changes and visualization

SIMOGGA Planner has evolved a lot and interaction with the actors of production process are now possible. The previous version of our planner allowed a predictive optimization mainly based on existing fabrication orders. In the new version, to match the real situation, modifications can be interactively carried out within the software so that real time optimizations of the production planning can be performed. Many features simplifying the management of resources and fabrication orders were added.”

Emmanuelle VIN, CEO of AMIA Systems, added: “We wanted this new version to reflect our collaboration with the manufacturing companies having trusted us since the very first release of our software. Thanks to the discussions with our customers, we could understand their needs and support them with the implementation of all their processes. Using this new version, we will help manufacturing companies to move towards Industry 4.0, by elaborating a realist transformation plan matching the ambition of these companies based on our expertise.”

What are the main advantages of this new version? Martine HOUYOUX, Sales Executive pointed out: “The European industry is radically changing but the first steps toward Industry 4.0 require heavy investments that cannot be often afforded by the vast network of SMEs, although these investments would strongly contribute to the competitiveness of the manufacturing industry. At AMIA Systems, we have decided to adapt our business model so that SMEs can benefit from effective tools: we have broadened our offer by providing “pay-per-use” usage and lite versions of our software to meet specific needs at reduced costs.”

The new version will be presented during a special event within the second trimester of 2017.

Besides, our team is working on a new product, SIMOGGA WMS [1], a tool to optimize the design and management of  warehouses. A beta will be presented by the end of Summer 2017.

Track & Trace your assets for years using Low Power Wide Area Network solutions /track-trace-your-assets-for-years-using-low-power-wide-area-network-solutions/ /track-trace-your-assets-for-years-using-low-power-wide-area-network-solutions/#respond Tue, 23 Feb 2016 16:07:21 +0000 https://amiasystems.wordpress.com/?p=88861 AMIA Systems has participated to a hackathon[1] to positively impact society with IoT and postal assets. We have built prototypes demonstrating the collection of data using Low Power Wide Area Network technologies. The idea was to collect data from the postman/postwoman and provide an added-value to the customers of the Post.

Why should you consider the Low Power Wide Area Network?

  • Track products for several months or years that are not directly connected to a power supply
    • Track the humidity of the warehouse storing sheet metal and send notifications to engineers if the level of humidity has reached a certain level
    • Hide the tracker inside your packaging or your items to collect valuable data that the transporter does not share with you
  • Build new business models by allowing peer-to-peer deliveries
    • Track the temperature of the items that are delivered by transporters you have never dealt with
    • Track the shock taken by the furniture and accessories carried by the transporters

The use case: collect data from devices such as CNC machines, Thermostat, GPS or Air quality sensor

  • Data are collected from sensors or machines (CNC Machines)
  • SIMOGGA Connect grabs the data generated by the sensors and the machines
  • SIMOGGA Layout Design displays the status of the machines and sensors in real-time
  • SIMOGGA Planner uses the data collected in order to impact the schedule of the operations
  • The engineers and operators implement the changes (Schedule, Shop floor layout, Warehouse Management) based on the data analytics
